The Best DIY Stain Remover

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 c. dish soap (I prefer Dawn for this)
  • 2/3 c. ammonia
  • 6 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. hot water

Begin by dissolving the baking soda in the water. Once the baking soda is completely dissolved, add the dish soap and ammonia. Ammonia is a very strong cleaner and the fumes can be a little much, so you may want to open a window. Pour into a large spray bottle (I believe this one is 24 oz.) Use on all your stained clothing just as you would Spray 'N Wash or Shout.

You'll note I marked not to mix with bleach on our bottle. Ammonia and bleach create toxic fumes when mixed and this cleaner has ammonia in it. However, I wrote this on the bottle because I don't think my kids always do their laundry correctly. I could totally see them dumping laundry soap and bleach directly in the washer and then going, oh, this might help and dumping some directly in the basin, as well. If you place your bleach in the appropriate dispenser on your washing machine and you spray the stain remover directly on your clothing and then place the clothing in the basin, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. However, use your common sense. Overall, the general rule is never to mix bleach and ammonia.

One last thing, this mixture will settle out. The best thing to do is to shake well before each use.
